About the Area
St. Joseph Island
St. Joseph Island is located at the northwest end of Lake Huron and east of the mouth of the St. Mary’s River and is one of the largest freshwater islands in the world. The population is 2300 residents which expands to double that amount in the summer with cottagers and visitors. Located 45 minutes drive from Sault Ste. Marie (pop. 75,000), 3 hour drive from Sudbury (pop. 164, 000), and a 7 hour drive from Toronto (pop. 3 million), St. Joseph Island is a peaceful and quiet escape from the hustle and bustle.
places to visit
The Island is connected to the mainland by a beautiful curved bridge. It contains two small towns complete with two marinas, a 24-hour hospital, pharmacy, grocery store, bank, gas station, hardware store, and a few restaurants and gift shops. There are also some important places to visit such as the Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site, St. Joseph Island Museum Village, Adcock’s Woodland Gardens and five beautiful beaches.
These are just a few of the things to do on St. Joseph Island. If you would like a list of my favorite Hidden Gems on and around St. Joseph Island please email me below and I’ll send it to you. Also check out my summer blog post for links to events and more details.
